The Mediterranean cruise season is in full swing, and with it comes a warning for cruise holidaygoers. Some unscrupulous taxi drivers near Greece’s bustling Piraeus Port are taking advantage of unsuspecting tourists. A recent traveller shared their unfortunate experience, losing over $80 on a short taxi ride from the port to Neos Kosmos, a nearby district.
A Short Journey Turns Sour
After disembarking from their cruise ship, the traveller hailed a taxi for what should have been a quick 15–30 minute ride. However, the journey quickly turned into a frustrating ordeal. The driver, who spoke no English, insisted on cash payment and issued a receipt for $17.10. Initially, this seemed reasonable given Athens’ taxi rates.
Unexpected Luggage Fees
Athens taxis have a flag-down rate of €1.80, with a daytime rate of €0.90 per kilometre. Additional fees for cruise terminal pickups are common. However, the traveller was shocked by an unexpected luggage fee of €11 per bag. With three bags, this fee nearly tripled the ride’s cost. Despite the confusion, the driver eventually accepted card payment.
Overcharged by More Than $60
The traveller later discovered their card had been charged $82.14, far exceeding the agreed amount. Fortunately, they had kept their receipt and could dispute the charge. Piraeus is one of Europe’s busiest cruise ports, and while most taxi drivers are honest, some exploit tourists, especially when there’s a language barrier.
Red Flags to Watch For
Travellers should be vigilant for certain warning signs: refusal to use the metre, insistence on cash payments, inflated luggage fees, and lack of a proper receipt. Another cruise passenger recounted a similar experience, where a driver refused to use the metre and threw their bags out.
Consider Rideshare Apps
Rideshare apps like Uber, available in Athens, offer a safer alternative. They provide fixed prices upfront, handle payments through the app, and offer customer support if issues arise. This can be a more reliable option for tourists.
Tips to Stay Protected
To avoid falling victim to taxi scams, always confirm the driver will use the metre before starting the ride. Keep your receipt and be aware that Greek taxis must accept card payments. Use a ride-hailing app when possible and inquire about luggage fees in advance. Researching taxi rates and checking real-time information can also help you stay informed and protected.
