A Royal Caribbean Cruise Adventure Gone Wrong
A recent incident on the Rhapsody of the Seas has caught the attention of cruise enthusiasts. A passenger, Jey González-Díaz, took a daring leap overboard to evade a hefty casino debt. This dramatic event unfolded on 7th September 2025, as the ship docked in San Juan, Puerto Rico, concluding a 7-night Southern Caribbean voyage.
Escape Attempt in San Juan
As passengers disembarked at Pier 4, González-Díaz made his bold move at around 9:15 am. Surveillance cameras captured him jumping into the water. He was soon picked up by a jet ski and taken back to shore. However, authorities were swiftly informed of the situation.
Cash, IDs, and a False Identity
Customs and Border Protection officers quickly notified Homeland Security Investigations. Before agents could arrive, González-Díaz was found near Puerto Rico’s Capitol Building. He was carrying $14,600 in cash, two mobile phones, a handbag, and five different IDs. Court documents reveal he confessed to jumping overboard to avoid declaring the cash, fearing it would be taxed.
Legal Consequences Await
González-Díaz now faces charges for failing to declare over $10,000 upon entering the United States, a serious federal offence. Investigators also uncovered that he boarded the cruise using his brother’s identity, who is currently in prison. This deception could lead to additional charges.
Lifetime Ban from Royal Caribbean
While Royal Caribbean has not publicly commented, it is likely that González-Díaz will face a lifetime ban from the cruise line and its affiliates. The company maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy against fraudulent activities and reckless behaviour, such as jumping from a ship. Currently, González-Díaz is out on bail, awaiting further legal proceedings.
