Cruise Passenger Falls to Death on Juneau Hiking Trail

A Tragic Incident on Mount Roberts

A cruise passenger tragically lost his life after a fall from the Mount Roberts trail in Juneau, Alaska. The accident occurred on Tuesday, 16th September 2025. Alaska State Troopers were alerted after 8 pm when two hikers were reported in distress. The men had been navigating the steep and challenging trail, renowned for its breathtaking views of Juneau and the cruise port below.

Rescue Efforts and Outcome

Both hikers slipped and slid down the rugged mountainside. Rescue teams from Juneau Mountain Rescue managed to reach one man, who suffered only minor injuries. Unfortunately, the second hiker, 36-year-old Britain Pool from Texas, fell further. Despite extensive search efforts using drones and specialist equipment, he was found deceased. His family has been informed of the tragic news.

Cruise Ships in Port

The two men were confirmed to be cruise passengers, though the specific ship remains unidentified. On that day, four cruise ships were docked in Juneau: Viking Venus, Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Encore, and Caribbean Princess.

Previous Hiking Fatality This Year

This incident marks the second fatality involving cruise passengers hiking near Juneau this year. In early July, 62-year-old Marites Buenafe from Kentucky also fell while hiking in the same area. A large search-and-rescue operation was launched, and her body was found 1,700 feet below the trail. The Mount Roberts trail, with its 3,800-foot elevation gain over 4.5 miles, is demanding even for seasoned hikers. Slick mud, uneven terrain, and steep drop-offs pose significant risks, especially after rain.

Hiking Safety in Alaska

Alaska’s scenic trails are a major attraction for cruise visitors, offering stunning views and wildlife encounters. However, safety must always come first. Experts advise hikers to carry essential safety gear, even for short walks. Beacon lights or emergency signalling equipment can be crucial in an emergency. It’s also important for guests to assess their fitness and hiking experience before tackling challenging routes.
