Exciting New Era for Royal Caribbean International
Royal Caribbean Group has unveiled plans for a groundbreaking new ship class for Royal Caribbean International. This announcement comes alongside a major expansion of Celebrity Cruises’ river operations. The company has partnered with Chantiers de l’Atlantique to construct two Discovery Class ships, with options for up to four more. The first ship is set to debut in 2029, with a sister ship following in 2032, pending standard conditions like financing.
Innovative Design Meets Purpose
While specific details remain under wraps, the new ships are expected to be slightly smaller than previous generations. This marks a departure from the trend of ever-larger vessels since the Oasis Class. Jason Liberty, chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, stated, “These ships will be a showcase of what’s possible when design meets purpose, ultimately bringing the world closer to our guests.” The collaboration with Chantiers de l’Atlantique leverages France’s renowned shipbuilding expertise and cutting-edge technology.
Discovery Class: A New Chapter
Michael Bayley, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, highlighted the Discovery Class’s focus on delivering unique experiences. From innovative design to immersive moments, every detail aims to surprise and delight guests. The partnership with Chantiers de l’Atlantique dates back to 1985, with the French shipbuilder having constructed 21 ships for the group, including the iconic Oasis Class and Celebrity Cruises’ Edge Class ships.
Speculation on Destination-Focused Experiences
The name and initial discussions around the Discovery Class have sparked speculation about a more destination-focused approach. However, Royal Caribbean has yet to confirm how these new ships will differ operationally from existing classes. The anticipation is building as cruise enthusiasts eagerly await more information.
Celebrity Cruises’ River Fleet Expansion
In addition to the ocean ship announcement, Royal Caribbean Group has also committed to expanding Celebrity Cruises’ river fleet. The company has ordered 10 more river cruise ships, aiming to double the fleet to 20 vessels by 2031. Construction has already begun on the first ship, Celebrity Compass, in the Netherlands. River cruising will commence in 2027 with Celebrity Compass and Celebrity Seeker, followed by additional ships in 2028.
A Promising Future for Cruise Travel
These developments signal a promising future for cruise travel, offering UK holidaygoers exciting new options. With innovative ship designs and expanded river cruising opportunities, Royal Caribbean Group continues to redefine the cruise experience. Stay tuned for more updates as these projects progress, and start planning your next unforgettable cruise adventure.
