Stomach Bug Hits Hundreds on Fred Olsen Cruise from UK

Stomach Bug Hits Fred Olsen Cruise Ship

A recent outbreak of a stomach bug has impacted hundreds of passengers on a Fred Olsen cruise. The Balmoral, a ship with a capacity of over 1,200, saw around 200 guests fall ill. Reports from the Shetland Times highlighted the spread of gastroenteritis, a contagious illness causing diarrhoea and vomiting.

Passenger Reactions and Health Announcements

During the voyage, daily announcements informed passengers about the rising cases of gastroenteritis symptoms. However, some guests believed the illness was due to seasickness from a rough crossing from Norway. This led to differing opinions on the severity of the outbreak.

Cancelled Shetland Stop and Onboard Health Measures

The Balmoral was set to dock in Lerwick on 27th January. However, stormy weather led to the cancellation of this stop. By then, reports of illness were already circulating. Fred Olsen Cruise Lines confirmed the presence of gastrointestinal symptoms among passengers. They quickly implemented measures to reduce transmission and provided medical support to those affected.

Deep Cleaning and Delayed Departure

The ship returned to Southampton for a thorough cleaning. This delayed its next departure to Norway, which took place on 30th January. Enhanced cleaning procedures were carried out both onboard and at the cruise terminal. The cruise line prioritised the safety and wellbeing of guests and crew, ensuring robust health protocols were in place.

Common Challenges in the Cruise Industry

Gastrointestinal outbreaks are not unusual in the cruise industry, especially during winter. Rough seas and close-contact environments can facilitate the spread of illness. Cruise lines often respond with isolation protocols, increased sanitation, and itinerary adjustments to safeguard passengers and crew.
