MSC Orchestra Skips Marseille Due to Sailors Blocking Cruise Port

Unexpected Disruption for MSC Orchestra in Marseille

On 2nd February 2026, the MSC Orchestra faced an unexpected hurdle. Striking sailors blocked the cruise port in Marseille, France, preventing the ship from docking. The protest, organised by the Fédération Nationale des Syndicats Maritimes Union (FNSM-CGT), effectively shut down the northern access to the port. As a result, the 3,223-passenger vessel had no choice but to skip the stop entirely.

Stranded at Sea

The MSC Orchestra, a Musica-class ship, waited offshore for several hours. Despite efforts to negotiate, no resolution was reached. Eventually, the decision was made to continue the journey without docking. This disruption was significant, as Marseille is a key embarkation and disembarkation point for the ship’s seven-night Mediterranean cruises.

Impact on Passengers

The inability to dock in Marseille left many passengers in a difficult situation. Those scheduled to disembark were unable to do so, while new guests waiting to board were left stranded at the port. One passenger expressed frustration on social media, stating they had been waiting since 11 am. Another noted the ship’s departure towards Genoa, highlighting the prolonged wait offshore.

Alternative Arrangements

MSC Cruises quickly arranged alternative plans for affected passengers. Those unable to board in Marseille were provided with hotel accommodation for the night. The following day, ground transport was organised to take them to Genoa, approximately 244 miles away. The road journey takes about two and a half hours.

Compensation and Future Plans

As of now, MSC Cruises has not confirmed any additional compensation for the missed day of the cruise. However, similar transfer arrangements are expected for passengers unable to disembark in Marseille. The company is likely to address these concerns in due course.

Behind the Port Blockade

While Marseille has seen cruise disruptions before, this incident was not linked to environmental groups like Extinction Rebellion. Instead, the blockade was due to a strike by sailors demanding better wages and working conditions. The union had filed a 48-hour renewable strike notice, coinciding with the MSC Orchestra’s visit.

Looking Ahead

Despite the disruption, the MSC Orchestra continued its itinerary, docking in Genoa as planned on 3rd February. The ship departed in the early evening, maintaining its schedule. Passengers and cruise enthusiasts alike will be watching closely to see how MSC Cruises addresses the situation and ensures smooth sailing in the future.
