Cruise Crew Arrested for Shoplifting at Port Canaveral

A Cruise Crew Member’s Arrest at Port Canaveral: What Happened?

A recent incident at Port Canaveral has caught the attention of cruise enthusiasts. A crew member from a cruise ship was arrested and deported after being accused of shoplifting. The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the arrest on 24th March 2026. However, details about the individual and the circumstances remain undisclosed.

MSC Meraviglia’s Involvement

While officials have not named the vessel involved, MSC Meraviglia was the only ship docked at Port Canaveral that day. The ship, which accommodates 4,488 passengers and around 1,600 crew members, had set sail from New York on 22nd March. It was on a 7-night journey to the Bahamas, with Port Canaveral as its first stop. MSC Cruises has not issued any statements regarding the arrest.

Detention and Deportation Process

After the arrest, local deputies reached out to US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at Cape Canaveral. Once local law enforcement completed their procedures, the crew member was handed over to federal authorities. An immigration detainer was issued, allowing CBP to take custody. The individual was then flown out of the United States from Orlando International Airport.

Visa Regulations for Cruise Crew

Cruise ship crew members working in US waters typically hold a C1/D Seaman Visa. This visa allows temporary entry for maritime employment. The cruise industry relies heavily on international staff, with many hailing from the Philippines, India, Eastern Europe, and Southeast Asia. Although crew arrests are rare, they do happen occasionally both on board and in port.

Other Recent Crew Arrests

The Port Canaveral incident is not an isolated case. In May 2024, a crew member on Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Encore faced arrest. He allegedly attempted to deploy a lifeboat and assaulted a security guard and a nurse. More recently, in January 2026, another crew member was detained in Bremerhaven, Germany. Routine checks revealed outstanding warrants for robbery and a probation violation.

While these incidents are rare, they highlight the challenges faced by the cruise industry. As cruise holidays continue to be popular among UK travellers, understanding these occurrences can provide valuable insights into the complexities of cruise operations.
