Cruise Lines Adjust Itineraries Amid Middle East Crisis

Middle East Tensions Impact UK Cruise Holidays

The ongoing unrest in the Middle East is causing significant disruptions for cruise lines. Celestyal Cruises has been particularly affected, leading to the cancellation of all remaining voyages for Celestyal Discovery and Celestyal Journey until April 2026. This decision comes as the ships remain stuck in the Arabian Gulf due to regional instability.

Celestyal Cruises’ Adjustments

Celestyal Cruises has withdrawn 11 cruises across its two vessels. The Mediterranean season for these ships is now set to start in early May. Celestyal Discovery plans to resume operations on 1st May, followed by Celestyal Journey on 2nd May. The cruise line aims to provide clarity and flexibility for its guests amidst the uncertainty.

Safety and Guest Assurance

Lee Haslett, Celestyal’s Chief Commercial Officer, emphasised the importance of safety and guest confidence. He acknowledged the disappointment this decision might cause but stressed the need for clarity. Both ships are currently docked safely, with Celestyal Discovery in Dubai and Celestyal Journey in Doha. All passengers and non-operational crew have been safely disembarked.

Options for Affected Passengers

Passengers impacted by these cancellations have been offered a full refund or the option to rebook with a future cruise credit. This ensures that guests have flexibility in planning their future cruise holidays.

Challenges in Returning to Europe

The main issue preventing the ships from returning to Europe is the unsafe conditions in the Strait of Hormuz. To reach Athens, the vessels must navigate a 4,400-mile journey through the Arabian Peninsula, the Red Sea, and the Suez Canal. This journey would take over eight days under ideal conditions. However, the current situation makes this route unfeasible.

Future Plans for Celestyal Cruises

Once conditions improve, Celestyal Discovery will offer short Greek Islands itineraries. Meanwhile, Celestyal Journey will embark on longer Adriatic sailings. The cruise line is preparing for a smooth transition once clearance is granted.

MSC Cruises’ Proactive Measures

In contrast, MSC Cruises has taken a proactive approach by cancelling MSC World Europa’s 2026-2027 winter season in the Middle East. Citing safety concerns, the cruise line has decided to redeploy the ship to the French Antilles in the Caribbean. This marks the vessel’s first season in the region, offering a mix of 7- and 14-night itineraries.

Conclusion

The unfolding situation in the Middle East continues to impact cruise travel plans. While Celestyal Cruises navigates immediate challenges, MSC Cruises is taking steps to ensure future safety. UK cruise holidaygoers should stay informed and flexible as the situation develops.
