UK Passenger Sues Celebrity Cruises Over Dance Floor Fall on Reflection

A passenger has taken legal action against Celebrity Cruises, claiming she fractured her foot after a fall on the dance floor of the Celebrity Reflection. Jeannette Beres, from Florida, alleges the incident occurred during an evening event in the ship’s grand foyer on 14th January 2025. The fall reportedly happened on Deck 3, a central area often used for live music and dancing. Beres claims she tripped over a speaker placed in the middle of the dance floor, an area meant for free movement. The fall allegedly resulted in a fractured foot and other injuries. On 26th March 2026, Beres filed a lawsuit seeking damages for pain, suffering, and financial losses related to the incident.

Celebrity Cruises Accused Of Safety Failings

In her legal filing, Beres accuses Celebrity Cruises of negligence. She claims the cruise line failed to maintain the dance floor safely, did not inspect the area properly, and neglected to warn passengers of potential hazards. Her legal team argues that the cruise line did not identify or remove what they describe as a dangerous obstruction. They also allege there were no signs or warnings to alert guests about the speaker’s presence. Celebrity Cruises has not publicly responded to these allegations. As with all legal cases, these claims remain unproven until examined in court. Establishing liability may hinge on whether the cruise line failed in its duty of care. No security footage or photographs of the area have been released publicly.

Safety Standards and Assumed Risks

Cruise operators generally follow international maritime safety standards, including those under the Safety of Life at Sea convention, which covers hazard prevention and passenger safety. Legal proceedings will likely explore whether these standards were met in this case. There is also the question of assumed risk, as passengers may accept certain inherent risks when dancing on a moving vessel, especially in crowded settings. Despite the lawsuit, Celebrity Reflection continues to operate short cruises to the Bahamas from Fort Lauderdale, offering 3- and 4-night itineraries for up to 3,046 guests.

Similar Cases Highlight Ongoing Legal Trend

Fall-related incidents are among the most common lawsuits faced by cruise lines, with several cases emerging recently. Royal Caribbean, a sister brand to Celebrity Cruises, has been named in multiple lawsuits involving passengers who reported injuries from falls during their voyages. In another instance, a claim was filed against Princess Cruises earlier this year, involving a passenger who allegedly slipped on decorative ribbing. These cases highlight a growing trend of legal actions related to passenger safety on cruise ships.
