Ambassador Cruise Returns to Antwerp: Scheldt River Oil Spill Closure

Unexpected Cruise Disruption from the UK

A cruise journey from the UK to Belgium, France, and the Netherlands faced an unexpected halt on 9th April 2026. An oil spill led to the closure of one of Europe’s busiest shipping routes. This forced the ship to return shortly after setting sail.

Ambition’s Return to Antwerp

Ambassador Cruise Line’s vessel, Ambition, had to turn back to Antwerp. Authorities suspended all traffic on the Scheldt River due to pollution from another ship. The vessel had just left the Belgian port when the closure order came through.

Initial Itinerary and Immediate Response

The cruise, which began in Portsmouth on 6th April, was on a six-night itinerary. It had already stopped overnight in Ijmuiden, Netherlands, before reaching Antwerp for a planned 14-hour visit. As Ambition tried to leave Antwerp at 11pm local time, port officials halted its movement. The captain navigated the ship back to port with tug assistance, where it stayed overnight.

Safety and Communication

The cruise line confirmed that Ambition was not directly affected by the oil spill. However, it had to remain docked until the waterway was safe. “The safety and wellbeing of our guests and crew is always our highest priority,” the company stated, thanking the captain and crew for their professionalism. Passengers were informed of the situation shortly after the ship’s return, with updates provided the next day.

Itinerary Adjustments

Once authorities cleared the way, Ambition left Antwerp at 4pm local time. The disruption led to changes in the itinerary. The ship skipped its planned stops in Bruges and Honfleur, heading directly to Le Havre, France. It arrived there by midday on 11th April and stayed until late evening. Despite these changes, the cruise is set to end in Portsmouth on 12th April as planned.

Compensation and Excursions

Ambassador Cruise Line has not confirmed if compensation will be offered for the missed ports. However, shore excursions were likely adjusted or cancelled.

Oil Spill Closes Key Waterway

The incident occurred during a refuelling operation at Deurganck Dock in the Port of Antwerp-Bruges. Oil leaked from the container ship MSC Denmark VI, spreading into the Scheldt River. This river is a vital maritime corridor connecting the North Sea with inland Belgium. It handles heavy traffic, including cargo vessels, tankers, and cruise ships. Emergency teams worked to contain the spill and minimise environmental damage, especially given the river’s tidal nature and nearby sensitive marshlands.
