Royal Caribbean’s Star of the Seas AquaDome Glass Panel Breaks

Unexpected Glass Breakage on Star of the Seas

Passengers aboard Royal Caribbean’s Star of the Seas witnessed an unusual event this week. A glass panel in the ship’s AquaDome shattered unexpectedly during a Caribbean cruise. The incident occurred on 26th May 2026, and photos of the damage quickly spread on social media. Fortunately, the glass remained intact within its frame, and there were no injuries or immediate threats to passenger safety.

A Noteworthy Incident on a New Ship

Star of the Seas, which began service in August 2025, is less than a year old. This makes the incident particularly noteworthy. The ship is part of Royal Caribbean’s Icon-class series and offers 7-night Caribbean cruises from Port Canaveral. The AquaDome, located on the forward top deck, is a key feature of the ship. By day, it offers stunning ocean views, and by night, it transforms into an entertainment hub with performances and immersive shows.

Possible Causes of Glass Breakage

Several factors can cause glass to break at sea. These include manufacturing defects, rapid temperature changes, strong weather, bird strikes, or stress from the ship’s movement. While the Caribbean is hot during late spring and summer, experts suggest sudden temperature changes are more likely to cause tempered glass to fail. Crew members are securing the area until the panel is replaced.

Previous Glass Incidents on Star of the Seas

This isn’t the first glass-related issue for Star of the Seas. Before its maiden voyage in August 2025, a glass safety barrier on Deck 15 shattered unexpectedly during a preview cruise. The area was quickly secured with temporary barriers, and no injuries were reported. However, guests nearby were startled by the sudden breakage.

Other Safety Precautions

The ship also faced another issue with its Frightening Bolt waterslide. This attraction was closed as a precaution after a similar incident on its sister ship, Icon of the Seas. An acrylic panel on the slide shattered just days before Star of the Seas debuted. Royal Caribbean suspended the slides’ operation for inspections and safety checks.

Ongoing Glass Issues Across the Fleet

Interestingly, Royal Caribbean has experienced a series of glass-related incidents across its fleet. These occurrences highlight the importance of ongoing safety measures and inspections to ensure passenger safety and enjoyment on their cruise holidays.
