Silversea Cruises’ Silver Whisper recently undertook a daring rescue mission in the Pacific Ocean. The luxury cruise ship diverted for seven hours to save an injured sailor from a damaged sailboat. This dramatic event unfolded on 26th May 2026, as the ship was nearing the end of its 24-night journey from Tahiti to Vancouver.
Swift Response to a Distress Call
The Silver Whisper, operated by Silversea under the Royal Caribbean Group, received a distress call. The sailor’s vessel, April Alice, was too far from Hawaii and the US mainland for an air rescue. Under SOLAS regulations, ships must assist those in distress at sea when safe to do so. Captain Michele Macarone Palmieri promptly altered the ship’s course to aid the sailor.
Challenging Conditions at Sea
The rescue operation was not without its challenges. The sailboat had lost power and communications amidst rough seas, and its mast was missing. The lone sailor had sustained a shoulder injury. Despite these difficulties, the Silver Whisper reached the stricken craft after approximately seven hours.
Passenger Reactions and Crew Praise
Passengers on board praised the crew’s bravery and skill. Jeff Hall, a guest, noted that the rescue was the smoothest part of their journey since leaving Hawaii. The ship had to manoeuvre alongside the sailboat twice after the first line broke. Guests were advised to stay indoors due to the conditions, but many watched as the sailor was safely brought aboard.
On Schedule Arrival in Vancouver
Despite the diversion, Silver Whisper was still expected to arrive in Vancouver on schedule on 28th May 2026. The ship had completed its port calls before the rescue. Following this voyage, Silver Whisper is set to begin its Alaska season from Vancouver, accommodating 392 guests and 302 crew members.
