Search Operation Underway for Missing Cruise Passenger in St. Kitts
A significant search operation is ongoing in St. Kitts and Nevis after a cruise passenger vanished while hiking on Mount Liamuiga. The missing individual, Wang Zyuan, a 33-year-old Chinese national, was last seen on 27th May 2026. He had embarked on a solo hike during a port visit from a Royal Caribbean cruise ship.
Challenging Terrain of Mount Liamuiga
Mount Liamuiga, known for its steep and challenging paths, is a popular destination for tourists. However, its rugged and slippery trails can pose difficulties, especially for those hiking without local guides. Zyuan was last spotted on the trail around 10 am local time, and authorities believe he became disoriented while hiking alone.
Lost Communication and Search Efforts
Zyuan managed to contact emergency services at approximately 2 pm, stating he was lost. Unfortunately, communication was lost shortly after. On 28th May, the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force confirmed a large-scale search and rescue mission was underway. This effort involves multiple agencies, including the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
Search Teams Mobilised
Emergency responders began their search shortly after the alert and continued into the evening of 27th May. The following day, teams resumed their efforts, moving up the mountainside towards the dormant volcano’s crater. Authorities are using mobile phone tower data to help pinpoint the search area.
Community Involvement and Ongoing Efforts
On 29th May, police appealed for volunteers to assist with the search around Mount Liamuiga. As of 30th May, no further updates have been released. Authorities urge anyone in the area to stay vigilant and report any information that might aid rescuers. Zyuan was last seen wearing black clothing and red shoes.
