Fred. Olsen Debuts World’s First Cruise-Inspired Original Soundtrack

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines has partnered with acclaimed Hollywood composer Benjamin Squires to create “Soundtrack for the Seas”, billed as the world’s first original musical score composed specifically for the cruise experience. The cinematic album, inspired by a Northern Lights voyage aboard the company’s ship Balmoral, marks Squires’ appointment as the cruise industry’s first-ever Composer-in-Residence.

Composer Captures Essence Of Smaller Ship Cruising Experience

The collaboration between Fred. Olsen and Benjamin Squires represents an innovative approach to enhancing the cruise experience through original music. Doug Glenwright, guest experience director at Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, explained that the soundtrack captures the emotional and sensory richness that defines smaller ship voyages with the operator.

“Cruising is an experience like no other, and our Soundtrack for the Seas beautifully captures the emotion, sounds and sensory richness of a smaller ship voyage with Fred. Olsen,” Glenwright stated. He emphasised that the music reflects the anticipation, wonder, and joy that guests experience throughout their sailings, whether they’re listening onboard, at home, or whilst dreaming of future adventures.

The project establishes Fred. Olsen as a pioneer in integrating bespoke musical experiences into cruise travel, setting the operator apart in an increasingly competitive market. The cruise line has built its reputation on delivering intimate, destination-focused voyages that appeal to discerning travellers seeking an alternative to larger resort-style ships.

Hollywood Talent Brings Cinematic Quality To Maritime Project

Benjamin Squires brings impressive credentials to his groundbreaking role as the cruise industry’s first Composer-in-Residence. His previous work includes scoring trailers for major Hollywood releases such as “Wicked: For Good” and “Avatar: Fire and Ash”, demonstrating his ability to create evocative music that resonates with audiences.

Squires’ transition from blockbuster film projects to cruise-inspired composition represents an unusual career move that underscores the creative potential he identified in maritime travel. His background in trailer music – a genre that demands the ability to capture emotion and atmosphere in condensed timeframes – proved ideal for translating the cruise experience into musical form.

The composer’s involvement elevates Fred. Olsen’s artistic ambitions and signals the cruise line’s commitment to offering experiences that extend beyond traditional onboard entertainment. By securing talent from the film industry, the operator has positioned itself at the intersection of travel and contemporary culture.

Ten-Day Northern Lights Voyage Provides Creative Inspiration
