New Twist In Villa Vie Cruise Crisis Leaves 203 Passengers Facing Uncertainty

New details have emerged about the Villa Vie Odyssey cruise crisis, with 203 passengers confirmed to have been affected by the sudden suspension of the ship’s world voyage in Cambodia.

The residential cruise operator has also clarified what assistance it is providing to displaced passengers, while Cambodian authorities have suggested that the vessel could leave the country as early as Saturday, 31st October 2026.

However, there is still no confirmed date for residents to return to their floating homes, and the company’s financial future remains uncertain.

Villa Vie Residences suspended operations on 27th October after announcing that soaring fuel costs had made its current business model unsustainable.

Passengers were ordered to leave the ship in Sihanoukville with approximately seven hours’ notice, bringing an abrupt halt to a continuous world voyage that began in Belfast in October 2024.

The latest developments provide a clearer picture of how many people have been affected, the assistance available to them and what might happen to the ship over the coming days.

Passengers Offered Accommodation But No Flights Home

Villa Vie founder Mikael Petterson has confirmed that the company is covering temporary accommodation and local transport for passengers displaced by the suspension.

However, it is not funding their journeys out of Cambodia.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Petterson explained that the company was assisting residents with accommodation and transport arrangements but had not provided financial support for international travel.

The distinction is particularly significant for passengers who have made Villa Vie Odyssey their permanent home.

Unlike guests on a conventional cruise holiday, residents may have no property waiting for them in their home countries. Some sold their houses or made other substantial financial commitments to participate in the residential cruising programme.

Those wishing to leave Cambodia may therefore need to arrange and pay for their own flights, despite having expected to continue living aboard the ship.

It remains unclear how long Villa Vie will cover temporary accommodation or whether additional financial assistance will become available if the suspension continues.

The company’s account of the support being provided has also been challenged by some residents.

Randy Cassingham, who has been living aboard Odyssey with his wife, Kit, has publicly criticised Villa Vie’s handling of the situation.

Speaking to AFP, he accused the operator of doing “absolutely nothing to help” stranded passengers, despite the company’s statements about providing assistance.

His comments suggest a difference between the assistance described by management and the experiences reported by at least some of those affected.
