Tragic Accident at Livorno Port: American Tourist Loses Life
A devastating accident at Livorno port in Italy has resulted in the death of an American tourist and left her husband critically injured. The incident occurred on 12th August, shortly after the couple returned from a city tour and exited their shuttle bus. Reports indicate that the 83-year-old woman and her 84-year-old husband were hit by another bus manoeuvring in the port area.
Details of the Incident
The woman, reportedly named Ellen Jan, was rushed to the hospital but tragically passed away shortly after. Her husband, Samuel Davis, remains in critical condition. The couple were guests on the Queen Victoria cruise ship. Although the cruise line has not issued an official statement, a passenger on the ship confirmed the news. The captain informed passengers of the tragic event.
Accident Investigation Underway
Initial investigations suggest the accident happened as the bus reversed, and the couple entered the driver’s blind spot. Witnesses noted that the driver had just assisted the woman off the bus and handed her a walker. The driver, described as experienced, was visibly shaken and realised something was wrong only after hearing shouts and a noise from behind the vehicle. Police have cordoned off the area to conduct a thorough investigation and interview witnesses.
Bus Accidents: Rare but Not Unheard Of
While such incidents are uncommon, they do occur. In June 2025, a sightseeing bus in Ketchikan, Alaska, carrying cruise passengers collided with an SUV, resulting in hospitalisations. Fortunately, no lives were lost. In September 2024, another Alaska tour bus overturned, injuring 12 passengers. More recently, in March 2025, a tour bus in Barcelona was involved in a collision, injuring 53 people, including several critically.
Safety in Cruise Excursions
Despite these rare incidents, the vast majority of bus transfers and excursions linked to cruises are completed safely. Thousands of guests enjoy these experiences each year without incident. Cruise lines and tour operators continue to prioritise passenger safety, ensuring that such tragic events remain exceptions rather than the norm.
