Four cruise passengers were rescued after falling into the water when American Cruise Lines’ American Independence broke free from its moorings during a sudden wind squall while alongside in Rockland, Maine.

The incident happened at around 2:30pm local time on 16th July 2026 as the 90-guest coastal cruise ship was visiting the town during an eight-night Maine Coast and Harbors itinerary.

According to local reports, a powerful squall producing winds of around 50 knots struck the harbour without warning, causing the 3,000-gross-ton vessel to break away from the dock while four passengers were crossing the gangway. As the ship shifted away from the pier, all four fell into Penobscot Bay.

Rockland Fire Chief Christopher Whytock confirmed the passengers were pulled from the water by people onboard the ship before emergency responders arrived. No injuries were reported.

The vessel later drifted across the harbour before colliding with another dock, leaving both the ship and port infrastructure damaged.

Wind Squall Leaves Damage To Ship And Harbour

After breaking free from its moorings at Rockland’s public landing, American Independence damaged several pilings before drifting towards the nearby Safe Harbor marina.

Rockland Harbormaster Molly Eddy told Midcoast Villager that the vessel struck the end of the dock, causing significant damage. Two floating dock sections will need to be replaced, while one piling and one dolphin, a group of pilings used for mooring and protecting vessels, were also damaged.

Eddy said the damage was extensive, although the outcome could have been far worse given the strength of the sudden storm.

The impact also caused damage to the cruise ship itself. Several windows aboard American Independence were reportedly shattered during the collision.

It remains unclear how long repairs to the harbour facilities will take or whether future cruise calls will be affected while assessments are carried out.

Rockland regularly welcomes ships from American Cruise Lines, including American Legend, American Pioneer and American Maverick, as part of the line’s coastal New England itineraries.

Larger ocean cruise ships generally call at Bar Harbor and Portland rather than Rockland, with lines including Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises featuring Maine on Canada and New England voyages.

American Cruise Lines had not publicly commented on the incident at the time of writing.

Other Cruise Ships Have Broken Free In Severe Weather

Although incidents like this are uncommon, they are not unprecedented, particularly during sudden periods of extreme weather.

Crystal has unveiled further details of its upcoming luxury cruise ship Crystal Grace, revealing a range of new family-focused venues and expanded outdoor spaces that will debut when the vessel enters service in 2028.

The new ship will introduce dedicated areas for children and teenagers, alongside the largest pool in the Crystal fleet and the line’s first private poolside cabanas, as the company continues to broaden its appeal to multi-generational travellers without moving away from its luxury positioning.

Among the highlights is a new outdoor family area on deck 11, designed to give younger guests a dedicated place to play while enjoying fresh sea air. The space will include a shallow pool, outdoor games and seating areas where families can relax together in a secure environment. Crystal said the area has been created to encourage active play and social interaction while complementing the elegant design found throughout the ship.

Family Facilities Expanded

Crystal Grace will also feature an enlarged Waves Teen Centre, which the cruise line says will be the biggest teen venue across its fleet. Reserved for guests aged 13 to 17, the space will include a larger entertainment lounge with a giant screen for gaming, films and organised activities, alongside dedicated areas for card and board games, plus a music and dance zone complete with its own sound system and dance floor.

The venue will host a daily programme of activities, with additional events during popular family travel periods, including the summer holidays and festive season.

For younger children aged between three and 12, Crystal is redesigning its Fantasia Children’s Playroom. The refreshed venue will continue to offer supervised activities, creative sessions and drop-off programmes, while the cruise line will also maintain its in-room babysitting service.

New Pool Deck And Private Cabanas

The centrepiece of Crystal Grace’s outdoor offering will be the Seahorse Pool, which will become the largest swimming pool across the Crystal fleet.

Located on deck 10, the pool area will feature 140 loungers spread across decks 10 and 11, giving guests plenty of space to relax while enjoying panoramic ocean views. A large outdoor LED screen will also be installed, hosting live sporting events, destination presentations and open-air movie nights.

Crystal Grace will also become the first ship in the fleet to offer private cabanas around the main pool.

Royal Caribbean has confirmed it will continue to suspend calls to its private destination at Labadee, Haiti, until at least the end of June 2027, extending a decision that had already removed the port from itineraries throughout 2026.

The cruise line said the move has been made as it continues to assess conditions in Haiti, with guest and crew safety remaining the priority. The extension affects all scheduled visits to Labadee during the first six months of 2027, with passengers already being informed of changes to their sailings.

“As we continue to evaluate conditions in Haiti and our ability to deliver the best vacations responsibly, we have decided to extend the suspension of ship calls to Labadee through June 2027. This decision was made with the safety and well-being of our guests and crew members in mind. We have communicated these changes directly with guests.”

The cruise line had previously announced in January that all Labadee calls for the remainder of 2026 would be cancelled. With this latest extension, the destination has now been removed from all published itineraries until at least July 2027.

Originally, Royal Caribbean had scheduled 62 visits to Labadee during the first half of 2027.

Those calls included voyages by several of the fleet’s largest and newest ships, including Star of the Seas and Legend of the Seas, alongside Adventure of the Seas, Allure of the Seas, Explorer of the Seas, Freedom of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Independence of the Seas and Odyssey of the Seas.

Replacement Ports Added To Itineraries

Guests booked on affected cruises began receiving revised itineraries from 14th July 2026, with replacement ports varying depending on the sailing and berth availability.

Alternative destinations being introduced include Nassau in The Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay, Puerto Plata and Samana in the Dominican Republic, Cozumel and Costa Maya in Mexico, and Ponce in Puerto Rico.

Passengers booked aboard Star of the Seas’ 2nd May 2027 sailing were informed:

“As you prepare for your vacation, we wanted to share an update to your May 2, 2027, itinerary. We’ve reviewed our sailing plans and made an adjustment to the ports of call we will visit. Instead of visiting Labadee, we’ll now enjoy a day in Perfect Day at CocoCay.”

Some sailings are seeing additional itinerary adjustments beyond the removal of Labadee.

For example, guests booked on Legend of the Seas’ 28th March 2027 voyage were advised that Falmouth, Jamaica, had also been removed from the itinerary. In its place, the ship will now call at Ponce, Puerto Rico, while Labadee has been replaced by Samana in the Dominican Republic.

Royal Caribbean told guests:

“Instead of visiting Labadee, we’ll now enjoy a day in Samana Port, Dominican Republic…Additionally, we’ll now visit Ponce, Puerto Rico from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM instead of Falmouth, Jamaica.”

A journalist who joined one of the world’s most talked-about adults-only cruises has shared an inside look at the experience, revealing how a week-long voyage costing up to $47,000 per cabin combines luxury cruising with an open-minded lifestyle community.

Sophia Money-Coutts sailed on the inaugural Killing Kittens cruise, organised by the lifestyle events company founded by Emma Sayle in 2005. The sold-out voyage travelled from Barcelona to Monaco before returning to Spain, welcoming 630 passengers for a week of themed entertainment and social events.

Killing Kittens describes itself as “the ultimate female empowerment brand”, although it is best known for hosting lifestyle parties across Europe. Speaking previously to The Times, founder Emma Sayle said she launched the business after realising “there was nowhere for women to go to feel empowered to explore their sexuality without being judged.”

With its expansion into cruising, the company has brought that concept to sea.

An Open-Minded Atmosphere At Sea

Money-Coutts said it quickly became apparent this was unlike any conventional cruise holiday.

Within an hour of leaving port, many guests had embraced the clothing-optional environment, with topless sunbathers and naked passengers becoming a common sight around the ship.

She wrote that conversations during the welcome drinks frequently turned to relationships and lifestyle preferences, with fellow passengers openly discussing subjects that would rarely come up on a mainstream cruise. She was also asked whether she intended to “play”, a term used by guests to describe participating in the cruise’s lifestyle activities.

Cabins on the sailing ranged from around £5,000 ($6,700) to £35,000 ($47,000), with the voyage selling out despite the premium pricing.

The cruise welcomed guests aged between 24 and 74, with passengers travelling from the UK, the United States and across Europe, as well as Canada, Ghana, Japan and Turkey.

Unlike many holidays, Killing Kittens only allows single women or couples to attend its events, with single men excluded under the company’s long-standing admission policy.

Guests also had access to a private social app called Wax, where they could chat before and during the sailing. Members could choose to upload recent STI test results to their profiles.

Despite the nature of the cruise, Money-Coutts said the atmosphere was surprisingly relaxed and body-positive, with passengers appearing comfortable in their own skin regardless of age or body shape.

Princess Cruises has confirmed that a crew member has died after going overboard from Regal Princess during a western Caribbean cruise, bringing an end to an extensive search and rescue operation off the coast of Cancun, Mexico.

The incident took place on 13th July while the 3,560-guest ship was sailing from Fort Lauderdale towards its scheduled call at Cozumel.

Cruise tracking data showed Regal Princess abruptly turning around before reaching the Mexican island as the crew launched an immediate search alongside local maritime authorities.

In a statement, Princess Cruises said: “Princess Cruises is deeply saddened to confirm the passing of a Princess crew member who has gone overboard today from Regal Princess.“

The cruise line added: “Our heartfelt condolences go out to the crew’s family and friends during this difficult time. Grief support services are being offered to guests and crew members affected by this event.“

Princess Cruises had initially confirmed that the crew member was unaccounted for and that an active search and rescue operation was underway, with the vessel working alongside the relevant maritime authorities in an effort to locate the individual.

Search Effort Involved Multiple Cruise Ships

The search operation took place in waters off the coast of Cancun on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula and resulted in Regal Princess suspending its planned arrival in Cozumel.

Carnival Jubilee, which was sailing a seven-night itinerary from Galveston, Texas, also joined the search while en route to Honduras. Following the conclusion of the operation, both vessels resumed their scheduled cruises.

Princess Cruises thanked everyone involved in the response, stating: “Princess Cruises thanks the local maritime authorities and our colleagues from Carnival Jubilee who assisted in search and rescue efforts.”

Itinerary Adjusted Following Search

The search operation forced Regal Princess to cancel its scheduled call to Cozumel on 13th July while the vessel remained in the search area.

Although the original port visit was missed, Princess Cruises revised the itinerary to return to Cozumel on 16th July instead. The ship’s scheduled call to Belize went ahead, while its visit to Roatán, Honduras, remained unchanged.

The vessel is still expected to complete its seven-night western Caribbean itinerary and return to its homeport in Fort Lauderdale on 18th July.

Princess Cruises has not released any further details surrounding the circumstances of the incident.

The ship will receive one new Pinnacle Suite spanning an impressive 1,550 square feet, making it the largest living space aboard the vessel.

This flagship suite will feature panoramic ocean views through expansive windows, a separate living room for entertaining, a dedicated powder room, and a walk-in wardrobe.

Guests will enjoy a private balcony offering sweeping vistas of the ocean and destinations visited throughout the voyage.

Complementing the Pinnacle Suite will be two new Bridgeview Suites, each measuring 900 square feet.

Royal Caribbean International has cancelled a sailing of Spectrum of the Seas departing from Shanghai on 11th July 2026, after authorities closed Wusongkou Cruise Port in response to Super Typhoon Bavi bearing down on China’s eastern coastline. Guests booked on the affected voyage will receive full refunds plus compensation and reimbursement for certain travel expenses.

The cancellation followed the decision by local authorities to close Shanghai’s Wusongkou Cruise Port through the scheduled embarkation day as Typhoon Bavi approached the region with dangerous winds and severe weather conditions. Royal Caribbean said it had been working closely with meteorological experts, local port authorities, and government agencies to monitor the storm and evaluate operations at the Port of Shanghai.

Forecasts predicted high winds and severe weather across Shanghai and the surrounding area, making it impossible for the 169,379-gross-ton vessel to safely begin its scheduled voyage. The cruise line emphasised passenger and crew safety as the paramount concern in making the difficult decision to cancel the sailing.

Four-Night South Korea Itinerary Scrapped

Spectrum of the Seas had been scheduled to depart Shanghai on 11th July 2026, for a four-night roundtrip cruise to South Korea. The itinerary included a single port call in Incheon, the gateway to Seoul, before the ship was due to return to Shanghai on 15th July.

The vessel, which entered service in April 2019 as the first Quantum Ultra-class ship purpose-built for the Chinese market, accommodates up to 4,246 guests at double occupancy. Spectrum of the Seas has become a fixture in the China cruise market, offering primarily short cruises from Shanghai to destinations including Japan and South Korea.

The ship features innovations specifically designed for Chinese travellers, including karaoke rooms, hotpot dining venues, and mahjong tables. At 169,379 gross tonnes, Spectrum of the Seas ranks among the largest cruise ships homeported in Asia and has been instrumental in Royal Caribbean’s strategy to capture the growing Chinese cruise market.

Comprehensive Refund And Compensation Package Offered

Passengers booked on the cancelled sailing will receive a full refund of all payments made towards the voyage, Royal Caribbean confirmed. Guests who used a Future Cruise Credit (FCC) to pay for part or all of their reservation will receive a refund of any additional cash payments, whilst the original FCC will be reissued for future use.

Beyond the standard refund, the cruise line is issuing new Future Cruise Credits to passengers who paid the cruise fare. Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady has been denied entry to Egyptian waters, forcing an LGBTQ+ charter cruise operated by Atlantis Events to cancel its scheduled call in Alexandria on 9th July 2026.

The rejection came just two days after Turkish authorities barred the same sailing from visiting Istanbul and Kuşadası, marking the second major itinerary disruption for the charter cruise within a week.

The denial by Egyptian authorities represents an unprecedented challenge for Atlantis Events, which has operated charter cruises for more than two decades. Scarlet Lady, carrying approximately 1,900 passengers on the LGBTQ+ themed voyage, was scheduled to dock in Alexandria as part of a revised itinerary that had already been altered following Turkey’s rejection earlier in the week.

Atlantis Events President Rich Campbell confirmed the news in a letter delivered to guests aboard the vessel. He expressed disappointment whilst noting that the company had successfully operated a similar itinerary to Egypt in 2025 without incident.

“It is with tremendous disappointment that I’m writing to share an important update about today’s scheduled visit to Alexandria,” Campbell wrote. “We successfully sailed a similar itinerary last year without issue, so we were surprised by this unfortunate decision.”

The company and Virgin Voyages reportedly worked extensively to secure permission for the port call, but Egyptian authorities ultimately refused to grant the vessel entry into the country’s territorial waters. Unlike Turkish officials, Egyptian authorities have not issued a public statement explaining the rationale behind the decision.

Itinerary Reshuffled With Cretan Replacement

Following the denial, Virgin Voyages moved quickly to implement another itinerary change. Scarlet Lady was redirected to Chania, Crete, with a call scheduled for 10th July 2026 from 8 am to 5 pm local time.

The previously scheduled stop in Heraklion, Crete, on 11th July has been replaced with a sea day, giving passengers additional time to enjoy the ship’s amenities and entertainment offerings. The remainder of the cruise itinerary will – hopefully – proceed as originally planned, including calls in Kotor, Montenegro, as well as Dubrovnik and Zadar in Croatia.

All shore excursions that had been booked for Alexandria were automatically cancelled, with refunds processed to guests’ onboard accounts. Passport collection, which had been scheduled to take place during the Egyptian port call, was also postponed since the vessel would no longer be entering the country.
