MSC Cruises Makes Major Crew Decision Following Deadly Virus Case

MSC Cruises has temporarily suspended the embarkation of crew members from Kenya until 31st October 2026 following the confirmation of the country’s first imported case of Bundibugyo Ebola virus disease.

The precautionary measure affects Kenyan employees preparing to join the cruise line’s vessels, although the company has not disclosed how many workers are currently unable to begin their assignments.

The decision follows the death of a Kenyan man who had travelled to Nairobi from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where a major Ebola outbreak has been ongoing since May.

MSC Cruises has indicated that the restriction is temporary and that developments will continue to be assessed before the end of the month.

There have been no announced changes to the cruise line’s itineraries or onboard services as a result of the decision.

Kenyan Crew Face Temporary Boarding Restrictions

MSC Cruises confirmed that its decision was taken in response to the developing public health situation in Kenya, rather than any reported outbreak aboard its vessels.

“As a precautionary measure following recent public health developments in Kenya, MSC Cruises has decided to temporarily suspend the embarkation of Kenyan crew members until 31 October while the situation continues to be monitored and assessed,” the cruise line stated.

The company employs hundreds of Kenyan nationals across its cruise operations, making the country an established source of personnel for its fleet.

However, the number of employees directly affected by the temporary suspension remains unclear.

Workers have reportedly been reassured that the restrictions will not affect their employment status, existing contracts or future opportunities with MSC Cruises.

The measure specifically concerns crew members embarking on ships. No details have been released about whether Kenyan employees already serving aboard MSC Cruises vessels will face any changes to their assignments.

It is also unclear what arrangements may be made for crew members whose existing contracts are due to finish before the suspension expires.

Crew changes are an important part of cruise ship operations, with employees regularly joining and leaving vessels as their contracts begin and end.

Delays to scheduled embarkations could therefore require adjustments to crew deployment, particularly if restrictions remain in place for an extended period.

However, MSC Cruises has not announced any staffing shortages or confirmed that the suspension will affect the services available to passengers.

The current restriction is scheduled to remain in effect until 31st October, although the cruise line has not confirmed whether normal embarkations will automatically resume on 1st November.
