Severe Winter Weather Disrupts Cruise Itineraries
Winter weather is causing significant changes in cruise itineraries. A powerful bomb cyclone is set to hit the US East Coast. Meanwhile, gale-force winds are sweeping through the Bahamas. This weather event is affecting cruise schedules over the weekend of 31st January and 1st February 2026.
Bahamas Cruises Face Strong Winds
The Bahamas Department of Meteorology has issued warnings. Strong winds are expected from midday Saturday to early Monday. These winds bring unusually cool temperatures to the region. Consequently, several popular ports are now unsafe for cruise operations. This includes private islands and exposed harbours.
Royal Caribbean has made changes to its itineraries. Oasis of the Seas has cancelled its visit to Perfect Day at CocoCay on 31st January. This was the final stop on its eight-night Southern Caribbean cruise. Utopia of the Seas has also cancelled its call to CocoCay on 1st February. Additionally, it will spend less time in Nassau on 31st January.
Margaritaville at Sea is adjusting its schedule rather than cancelling stops. Margaritaville at Sea Paradise will now visit Nassau on 31st January. This change helps the ship avoid the worst of the winds.
Disney Cruise Line is also revising its plans. Disney Wish will skip Castaway Cay on 1st February. Instead, it will stay longer in Nassau. To manage port congestion, Disney Dream will remain at sea, skipping Nassau.
East Coast Cruises Return Early
The bomb cyclone is expected to bring heavy snow and strong winds to the US East Coast. This creates challenging conditions for ships returning to northern homeports. MSC Meraviglia is returning to New York earlier than planned. Despite this, the next sailing on 1st February is still on schedule. Passengers are advised to be cautious when travelling to the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal due to icy conditions.
Norwegian Cruise Line is also making adjustments. Norwegian Breakaway is cutting short its 11-night Caribbean cruise. It will return to Manhattan on 1st February instead of 3rd February.
Conclusion
Cruise lines are prioritising safety amid severe weather. Itinerary changes are necessary to avoid unsafe conditions. Passengers should stay informed and flexible. Despite disruptions, cruise lines aim to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
