Iona Cruise Departure Delayed by Banana Cargo Spill

Unexpected Delay for P&O Cruises’ Iona

P&O Cruises’ flagship, Iona, experienced an unusual delay in its departure from Southampton. The reason? A nearby cargo vessel, the Baltic Klipper, lost 16 shipping containers in the Solent on the evening of 6th December. This incident occurred close to the Nab Tower Lighthouse, off the Isle of Wight.

Floating Cargo Poses a Hazard

Among the lost containers, eight were filled with bananas, two with plantains, and one with avocados. The remaining five were empty. These drifting containers posed a significant navigation hazard. As a result, Iona stayed safely docked in Southampton, avoiding a risky night-time departure through the busy shipping channel.

Swift Response from UK Coastguard

The UK Coastguard acted quickly, deploying search teams and aircraft. They warned that collisions with the floating containers could cause severe damage to passing vessels. Recovery crews were also at risk. The Coastguard’s prompt action ensured the safety of all involved.

Iona’s Itinerary Remains Unchanged

By the evening of 7th December, Iona was cleared to set sail. The 5,200-passenger ship departed at approximately 17 knots. Fortunately, the delay did not affect the 14-night Canary Islands cruise itinerary. Iona’s first stop is Funchal in Madeira on 10th December, followed by Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Arrecife, Cádiz, and Lisbon. The ship is scheduled to return to Southampton on 20th December.

Ongoing Recovery Efforts

Five containers have already washed ashore near Selsey in West Sussex. Local authorities, police, and fire services have cordoned off the area, advising the public to stay away. Additional containers have been spotted offshore, and aerial search teams continue to monitor the situation. Cleanup operations are set to begin on 8th December.

Public Safety and Legal Obligations

Authorities urge anyone who finds debris to report it immediately. Under UK maritime law, failing to report wreck material within 28 days is a criminal offence. While cargo spills are not uncommon near major shipping hubs, the sight of banana-filled containers drifting ashore has certainly captured public attention.
