Temporary Halt on Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day Mexico Project
A Mexican court has temporarily paused the construction of Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day Mexico in Costa Maya. This decision follows an injunction request by the environmental group Right to a Healthy Environment (DMAS). The court’s ruling aims to ensure all environmental and legal standards are met before proceeding.
Environmental Concerns Under Review
The injunction does not cancel the project. Instead, it seeks to prevent irreversible environmental damage while outstanding issues are assessed. A court hearing will soon decide if the suspension will continue during these evaluations. This pause allows authorities to thoroughly examine the project’s compliance with environmental regulations.
DMAS’s Stance on the Project
DMAS is not against the cruise line’s plans in principle. They recognise the potential economic benefits for the region. However, they insist that land-use concerns must be addressed first. The organisation emphasises the importance of respecting laws and urban planning.
Protecting Mangrove Ecosystems
A major concern is the protection of local mangrove ecosystems. These play a vital role in water filtration and preventing coastal erosion. Environmentalists warn that damage to these habitats could have long-term effects on the environment and nearby communities.
Infrastructure Challenges
The region’s sanitation infrastructure is already under pressure. An influx of visitors could strain wastewater and sewage systems further. This could impact surrounding towns, raising questions about the project’s sustainability.
Royal Caribbean’s Response
Royal Caribbean has stated there are no plans to build within protected mangrove zones. They also plan to include restoration initiatives to enhance these habitats. The company is committed to complying with Mexican environmental and planning laws.
Local Opposition and Previous Challenges
This is not the first challenge for the Perfect Day Mexico project. In August 2025, a Change.org petition called for more protections for the nearby fishing village of Mahahual. The petition highlighted similar environmental concerns and has gathered over 357,000 signatures.
Community Involvement and Safeguards
Both the legal challenge and the petition do not aim to block the development entirely. Instead, they call for stronger safeguards for local communities. They also advocate for greater public involvement in decision-making processes.
