Cruise Holiday Costs on the Rise: What UK Travellers Need to Know
Cruise enthusiasts in the UK may soon face increased holiday expenses. Rising oil prices, driven by tensions in the Middle East, are impacting the cruise industry. Some cruise lines are already introducing new fuel surcharges.
Impact of Middle East Tensions on Oil Prices
Since the conflict involving Iran began on 28th February 2026, global oil markets have been volatile. Brent crude prices have surged by nearly 40%, surpassing $100 per barrel. The disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route, is a major concern.
Fuel Surcharges Introduced by Cruise Lines
Despite investments in cleaner technologies, most cruise ships still rely on traditional marine fuels. Consequently, rising fuel costs are being transferred to passengers. Resorts World Cruises’ brands, StarCruises and Dream Cruises, have already implemented fuel surcharges.
Details of the New Charges
From 20th March 2026, new bookings with these cruise lines will incur additional daily fees. Dream Cruises has set a charge of SGD15 per person, per day on Genting Dream sailings. This ship operates from Singapore to Malaysian ports like Port Klang and Malacca.
StarCruises passengers face higher increases. Those on Star Voyager will pay HKD 200 per person, per night. This vessel is based in Hong Kong. Meanwhile, Star Navigator travellers from Keelung, Taiwan, will be charged NTD 600 per person, per night.
Potential for More Cruise Lines to Follow
Fuel surcharges are not common, but many cruise contracts allow for them if fuel prices exceed certain levels. With current oil prices above these thresholds, more cruise lines might introduce similar charges. Carnival Corporation, for instance, can charge up to $9 per person, per day if oil prices exceed $70 per barrel.
Norwegian Cruise Line has a similar provision. They can impose up to $10 per passenger, per day when fuel prices surpass $65 per barrel. For a family of four on a seven-night cruise, this could mean an additional $280.
What This Means for UK Cruise Holidaygoers
UK travellers planning a cruise should be aware of these potential extra costs. It’s wise to check with your cruise line about any new surcharges before booking. Staying informed can help you budget effectively for your next cruise adventure.
