Nine Arrested for Drug Smuggling Before Atlantis Gay Cruise from Miami

Unexpected Arrests at PortMiami

Nine individuals found themselves in custody at PortMiami on Sunday. They were apprehended as they attempted to board a cruise organised by Atlantis Events. This cruise, known for being the largest gay festival at sea, was set to sail on the Symphony of the Seas, a Royal Caribbean vessel.

Discovery of Narcotics

The arrests took place just before the ship’s scheduled departure. US Customs and Border Protection officers, with the help of trained detection dogs, were conducting routine baggage checks. Several suitcases raised suspicions, leading to further inspection.

Collaboration with Local Authorities

Once potential narcotics were identified, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office was called in. Their Narcotics Interdiction Squad played a crucial role in the arrests. Detective Joseph R. Peguero Rivera confirmed that deputies were on-site to assist with the operation.

Charges and Seized Substances

The operation uncovered a variety of illegal drugs. These included MDMA, LSD, and cocaine. Authorities also found ketamine, methamphetamine, and GBL, a chemical linked to GHB. The individuals arrested face various drug-related charges.

Details of the Accused

The accused hail from different parts of the United States. They include Joshua S. Eddy from California, Brad R. Kloha from Tennessee, and Adam Jones from Georgia, among others. Each faces serious charges, ranging from trafficking to felony possession.

Legal Proceedings and Defence

All nine were taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Arrest affidavits detail the process of luggage screening, substance testing, and subsequent arrests. Miami defence attorney Jordan Lewin, representing one of the accused, maintains his client’s innocence.

Implications for Cruise Travellers

This incident serves as a reminder for cruise holidaygoers. It’s crucial to be aware of the strict security measures in place at ports. Travellers should ensure their luggage is free from prohibited items to avoid legal complications.
