The recent 8.8 magnitude earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on 29th July 2025 sent shockwaves through the cruise industry across the Pacific. Cruise ships in Hawaii and Alaska had to act swiftly in response to the ensuing tsunami warnings. Although the immediate threat has now subsided, the impact on cruise operations was significant.
Pride of America Evacuates Hilo, Leaving Guests Behind
In Hawaii, the situation escalated quickly. Hawaiian officials issued a tsunami warning in the late afternoon, urging everyone to evacuate coastal areas. The first wave was anticipated at 7:10 pm HST. Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America, docked in Hilo, had to make a rapid decision. With clearance from Hawaii’s Department of Transportation, the ship departed ahead of schedule to ensure safety.
This sudden departure left over 300 guests and crew members ashore. Some families found themselves separated, with members both on and off the ship. Norwegian Cruise Line communicated with guests via SMS, advising them to seek higher ground and follow local authority instructions. Those on official shore excursions were taken to Waiakea High School, a designated evacuation site, offering shelter and refreshments.
Throughout the night, Pride of America stayed offshore, waiting for clearance to return. By the morning of 30th July, after safety checks at Hilo Harbor, guests were reunited with the ship. The cruise continued with a revised itinerary, skipping the planned stop in Kona but arriving on time in Nawiliwili, Kauai, on 31st July.
Alaska Cruise Ships on High Alert
Meanwhile, in Alaska, cruise ships were also on high alert. The earthquake’s impact was felt along Alaska’s coastlines, coinciding with the peak of the summer cruise season. Ships in regions like the Aleutian Islands and Inside Passage, as well as ports such as Seward and Sitka, were under tsunami advisories or watches. Estimated wave arrival times were between 8:30–9 pm local time on 29th July.
One of the closest vessels to the earthquake’s epicentre was Villa Vie Odyssey, currently on a three-year world cruise. The ship, along with others in the area, had to remain vigilant and prepared for any potential impact.
Conclusion
The swift response of cruise lines to the tsunami warnings highlights the importance of safety protocols in the cruise industry. While the immediate danger has passed, the events serve as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of cruising in regions prone to natural disasters. For UK holidaygoers planning a cruise, staying informed and prepared is key to ensuring a safe and enjoyable journey.
