Juneau, Alaska is preparing for its annual flood event as water levels rise in Suicide Basin near Mendenhall Glacier. The National Weather Service is forecasting a potential release in early to mid-August that could disrupt shore excursions for dozens of cruise ships visiting the popular port.
The seasonal flooding, which reached record levels in August 2025, is expected to primarily affect glacier-viewing tours, hiking excursions, and kayaking activities in the Mendenhall Valley area. However, cruise ship calls to the port are not expected to be cancelled.
Suicide Basin, a side basin located just east of Mendenhall Glacier, undergoes an annual cycle that has become increasingly significant for Juneau’s tourism industry. The basin gradually fills with rain and snowmelt throughout the summer months.
Once it reaches capacity, the accumulated water breaks through beneath the glacier, flooding several miles of the valley below. The National Weather Service has been monitoring water levels with particular vigilance following the catastrophic flooding event of August 2025, which set new records for the region.
Current projections indicate the basin will reach capacity sometime between 8th August and 12th August. Weather conditions will ultimately determine the precise timing.
“Cloudy days will push the timing beyond that range while more sunny days would push it to the beginning of that range,” the National Weather Service carefully noted in its forecast. This highlights the unpredictable nature of the phenomenon.
Timeline Remains Uncertain Despite Close Monitoring
Even after Suicide Basin reaches its fill limit, the timing of the actual flood event remains difficult to predict with precision. The delay between the basin reaching capacity and the sub-glacial release can vary significantly based on multiple factors.
According to the National Weather Service, historical patterns show considerable variation in this timeline. “In the past it has taken up to six days for the main event (sub-glacier release) to start after the basin is full with water going over the overflow channel,” officials explained.
This unpredictability makes advance planning challenging for both local authorities and the cruise industry. There is no reliable method to forecast the extent of flooding, the specific areas that will be affected, or the duration of any closures that may result from the natural event.
Cruise Operations Will Continue As Scheduled
Despite the looming flood threat, no cruise lines have announced adjustments to their Juneau itineraries for mid-August. The port remains firmly on the schedule for vessels from major cruise operators including Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International, Oceania Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, and MSC Cruises.
