Hundreds of passengers were evacuated from the cruise ship Amadea after a fire broke out while the vessel was alongside the cruise quay in Rønne, Denmark, on Monday, 14th September 2026.
The fire started in a linen-storage compartment aboard the Bahamas-flagged vessel, prompting the evacuation of 320 passengers. No passengers or crew members were injured during the incident.
Bornholm Police received the alarm at 7.21am, bringing police officers and emergency services to the port. Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control and extinguish it within around ten minutes.
Authorities subsequently confirmed that the immediate danger had passed, while those evacuated from Amadea were reported to be safe and in good condition.
Evacuation praised by fire service
Emergency crews responding to the incident included Bornholm Fire Service and the Danish Emergency Management Agency, with personnel remaining at the cruise terminal as the affected area was examined.
The ship’s crew assisted the emergency response both by evacuating passengers and by helping firefighters find their way through the vessel.
Emil Gørløv, incident commander with Bornholm Fire Service, praised the crew’s response.
“They did a fantastic job evacuating the ship, and they gave us good guidance so we could quickly find our way around on board,” Gørløv said.
Rønne Port employees were also involved in the operation, directing emergency vehicles along the access road leading to the ship.
The relatively short period between the alarm being raised and the fire being extinguished limited the duration of the emergency, although the evacuation involved more than 300 people.
Investigation into cause of fire
With the fire extinguished and passengers accounted for, attention turned to establishing how the blaze began.
Bornholm Police launched an investigation into the cause of the fire in the linen-storage compartment. Emergency personnel and investigators remained at the terminal while the affected section of the vessel was examined.
Amadea is operated by German cruise company Phoenix Reisen and sails under the flag of the Bahamas. The vessel is approximately 193 metres long, has a gross tonnage of around 29,000 and can accommodate about 600 passengers.
The incident occurred while Amadea was berthed at Rønne, the principal port on the Danish Baltic Sea island of Bornholm.
