Royal Caribbean International has selected retired U.S. Air Force General Lori J. Robinson as godmother of Legend of the Seas, the cruise line’s third Icon Class vessel.
The historic appointment celebrates Robinson’s trailblazing military career whilst honouring American veterans through a naming ceremony scheduled for Veterans Day 2026.
General Robinson’s selection marks a significant moment for both Royal Caribbean and the wider cruise industry. The retired four-star general served the United States Air Force with distinction for 37 years, beginning her career in 1981 and continuing through her retirement in 2018.
During her decorated service, Robinson shattered numerous glass ceilings and achieved several historic firsts within the American military establishment. Her leadership positions included serving as commander of Pacific Air Forces from 2014 to 2016, overseeing operations across one of the world’s most strategically important regions.
Robinson’s most groundbreaking achievement came when she became the first woman to lead a major combatant command in U.S. military history. This unprecedented appointment demonstrated not only her exceptional capabilities but also represented a watershed moment for women in military service worldwide.
Veterans Day Ceremony Adds Profound Significance
The naming ceremony for Legend of the Seas will take place on 11th November 2026 at Fort Lauderdale, Florida – a date that carries deep meaning beyond the maritime tradition.
This date coincides with Veterans Day, the annual American observance honouring all military veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces.
The timing transforms what would already be a significant event into something far more meaningful. By scheduling the ceremony on Veterans Day, Royal Caribbean creates an opportunity to recognise generations of service members whilst celebrating its newest vessel.

Legend Of The Seas Journey To Fort Lauderdale
Legend of the Seas officially entered service on 4th July 2026, another symbolically significant American date. The 248,663-gross-tonne vessel spent its inaugural season sailing European waters, showcasing Royal Caribbean’s latest innovations to Mediterranean and Northern European markets.
The ship is scheduled to reposition from Barcelona to Fort Lauderdale with a 13-night transatlantic crossing departing 25th October 2026. This voyage will transport Legend across the Atlantic Ocean, arriving at its Florida homeport on 7th November 2026 – just four days before the naming ceremony.
