Virgin Voyages has cancelled Brilliant Lady’s 30th October 2027 Halloween sailing from Los Angeles after securing a private charter booking.
They are also splitting the ship’s subsequent Mexican Riviera cruise into two shorter voyages as part of a broader West Coast schedule adjustment.
The cancellation affects passengers booked on what was meant to be a festive Halloween voyage aboard the 2,770-guest vessel.
Originally scheduled to depart from Los Angeles on 30th October 2027, the cruise was set to call at San Diego, Ensenada, and Cabo San Lucas before returning to the Southern California port on 6th November.
Virgin Voyages notified affected guests directly about the cancellation, citing the private charter as the reason for the disruption.
“Due to a private charter, this voyage has been canceled,” the cruise line stated in its notice to passengers.
“We’re sorry for the disruption. We know how much planning goes into a vacation like this, and we certainly don’t take this lightly.”
The identity of the charter client and specific details surrounding the booking arrangement have not been publicly disclosed by Virgin Voyages.
At the time of the announcement, the Halloween sailing remained visible on the cruise line’s website, though attempts to complete bookings led to error pages.
Private Charters Prove More Profitable For Cruise Lines
This cancellation marks another instance of Virgin Voyages prioritising private charters over traditional sailings, a decision driven by straightforward economics.
Charter arrangements typically prove more lucrative for cruise operators because they involve purchasing every cabin aboard the vessel, guaranteeing full revenue regardless of market conditions.
By contrast, standard sailings carry inherent financial risk, as cruise lines cannot guarantee complete occupancy across all accommodation categories.
During softer booking periods or less popular sailing dates, ships may depart with unsold inventory, representing lost revenue that cannot be recovered.
Virgin Voyages has made similar decisions previously.
In August 2025, the cruise line cancelled Scarlet Lady’s 19th April 2026 seven-night Caribbean sailing to accommodate a charter by Summit at Sea, demonstrating the company’s willingness to displace individual bookings when presented with guaranteed full-ship revenue.
Subsequent Mexican Riviera Sailing Also Affected By Changes
Passengers booked on Brilliant Lady’s following departure have encountered their own disruption, though for different reasons.
Virgin Voyages has replaced the seven-night Mexican Riviera cruise originally scheduled to depart Los Angeles on 6th November 2027 with two separate shorter voyages as part of a West Coast scheduling restructure.
The original weeklong itinerary included calls at San Diego and an overnight stay in Cabo San Lucas before returning to Los Angeles on 13th November.
