Carnival Cruise Line has cancelled a repositioning cruise aboard Carnival Splendor scheduled for September 2027, citing a change to the ship’s drydock schedule.
The affected sailing was set to reposition the vessel from Singapore to Sydney with multiple port calls across Indonesia and Australia.
The cancelled voyage was scheduled to depart on 1st September 2027, taking passengers on an extensive repositioning journey from Singapore to the ship’s Australian homeport of Sydney.
The itinerary featured an impressive array of destinations spanning Indonesia and Australia’s eastern coastline.
Planned port calls included Lombok and Benoa in Indonesia, followed by Australian destinations Darwin, Cairns, Airlie Beach and Moreton Island.
The cruise would have offered passengers the unique experience of crossing the Equator during the voyage, a maritime tradition that remains popular amongst cruisers.
August 2027 Drydock Behind Cancellation Decision
Carnival Cruise Line attributed the cancellation to necessary changes in Carnival Splendor’s drydock schedule, which is now set for August 2027.
The timing of this scheduled maintenance period has created a conflict with the ship’s planned repositioning voyage, forcing the cruise line to cancel the sailing entirely.
Drydock periods are essential for cruise ships, allowing operators to perform mandatory safety inspections, technical upgrades, and refurbishment work that cannot be completed whilst the vessel is in service.
These scheduled maintenance windows are strictly regulated by maritime authorities and must be completed within specific timeframes to maintain a ship’s certification for passenger operations.
The decision to reschedule a drydock can stem from various operational considerations, including the availability of drydock facilities, the need to coordinate fleet-wide maintenance schedules, or changes in regulatory requirements.
For Carnival Cruise Line, managing drydock schedules across its extensive fleet of vessels requires careful planning to minimise disruption to passengers whilst ensuring all ships receive necessary maintenance.
Compensation Package Includes Rate Protection And Onboard Credits
In a statement to affected passengers, Carnival Cruise Line outlined a comprehensive compensation package designed to minimise the inconvenience caused by the cancellation.
The cruise line has committed to protecting passengers’ cruise rates on comparable sailings in similar accommodation categories, ensuring they will not face increased costs when rebooking.
Additionally, guests who choose to reschedule their cruise will receive a $50 per person onboard credit, up to a maximum of $100 per stateroom.
This credit will be automatically posted to passengers’ onboard accounts during their rescheduled voyage, providing additional spending power for drinks, speciality dining, shore excursions, or spa treatments.
