Oasis of the Seas is facing an eight-hour delay returning to Cape Liberty, New Jersey on 20th September 2026 following emergency medical evacuations that required the vessel to reverse course to Nassau.
The disruption has forced Royal Caribbean to cancel a port call and significantly delay embarkation for the ship’s next sailing, affecting hundreds of passengers across two consecutive cruises.
The medical emergencies unfolded as Oasis of the Seas was making her way north from the Bahamas towards New Jersey, positioning approximately 120 miles northeast of Nassau near Treasure Cay.
According to communications from the ship’s captain, the vessel’s medical staff determined that two guests required urgent medical attention that could not be adequately provided onboard.
The first emergency involved a critically ill seven-year-old child, prompting the captain to make the difficult decision to reverse course and return to Nassau, the nearest port with appropriate hospital facilities.
While the ship was en route back to the Bahamas capital, a second guest was reported critically ill, further complicating the situation.
The nature of the medical conditions has not been disclosed publicly, in line with standard cruise line privacy protocols regarding passenger medical situations.
However, the captain’s characterisation of both cases as critical underscores the severity of the circumstances that necessitated the dramatic course reversal.
Successful Debarkation But Significant Time Loss
Oasis of the Seas successfully completed the medical evacuations in Nassau, ensuring both passengers could receive appropriate care at shore-based medical facilities.
However, the ship did not depart Nassau to resume her northbound journey until just before 1:00 p.m. on Friday, 18th September, according to the captain’s public address announcement.
The delay has created a cascading effect on the ship’s schedule that cannot be recovered.
Oasis of the Seas was originally scheduled to arrive at Cape Liberty at approximately 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, 20th September, but the revised arrival time is now approximately 2:00 p.m., with debarkation starting around 2:30 p.m.
Royal Caribbean sent a letter to all guests onboard explaining the situation and expressing appreciation for their understanding.
“We appreciate your patience and understanding, knowing we’d do the same for you or a loved one in a similar situation,” the communication stated, emphasising that medical emergencies take precedence over schedule adherence.
Distance And Speed Calculations Explain Extended Delay
The substantial delay makes sense when examining the distances involved and the ship’s maximum capabilities.
AIS tracking data confirms that Oasis of the Seas had travelled a considerable distance from Nassau before turning back, covering approximately 120 miles northeast to the waters near Treasure Cay before reversing course.
