A crew member from Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Breakaway tragically went overboard off the coast of Massachusetts. This incident occurred on the night of 25th April 2026, as the ship was returning from a Bermuda cruise. Security footage captured the crew member falling into the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 12 miles from Wellfleet on Cape Cod. Passengers were alerted by a ship-wide man overboard announcement, prompting immediate action.
Search Operation Launched Overnight
The Norwegian Breakaway was nearing the end of its 7-night Bermuda cruise, scheduled to arrive in Boston the next morning. At around 11:55 p.m. local time, the ship altered its course to initiate a search and rescue operation. The vessel remained in the area for about four hours before resuming its journey to Boston. The U.S. Coast Guard quickly joined the search, deploying a rescue helicopter shortly after 1:15 a.m. and sending crews from Coast Guard Station Provincetown. Another helicopter was launched later on 26th April to continue the search. Unfortunately, the Coast Guard suspended the search just after midday, pending new information.
Impact on Passengers
Passengers arriving in Boston received a letter from the cruise line explaining the delay. The letter detailed the overnight search and rescue efforts, emphasising the ship’s collaboration with maritime authorities. It reassured passengers that the safety and well-being of everyone at sea are paramount. The ship eventually docked at Boston’s Black Falcon Terminal shortly before noon on Sunday. The embarkation for the next cruise was delayed due to the late arrival.
Passenger Describes Overnight Search
Some passengers noticed unusual activity during the night. Rebecca Durandisse, a passenger from Needham, Massachusetts, recounted waking up during the operation. “It’s very heartbreaking,” she said. “This morning they announced that a crew member went overboard. I was in my estate room, drifting off to sleep when a light woke me up, and then I heard loud noises.” The identity of the crew member has not been released, and the circumstances leading to the fall remain unclear.
Background on Overboard Incidents
While overboard incidents on cruise ships are rare, they do occur. Cruise lines and maritime authorities take these situations seriously, prioritising safety and swift response. The Norwegian Breakaway’s recent incident highlights the importance of vigilance and preparedness in ensuring passenger and crew safety on the high seas.
