MSC Cruises Adjusts Hotel Service Charges
MSC Cruises is set to increase its daily hotel service charges for passengers travelling in the Caribbean and Alaska. This change will take effect from 11th May 2026. The cruise line has already started informing passengers via email and has updated the pricing details on its website. This move aligns with a broader industry trend, as several major cruise operators have recently introduced similar price hikes.
New Rates for Staterooms and Suites
Under the new pricing structure, guests in standard staterooms will experience a $1 increase per person, per night, bringing the total to $17. Those staying in the premium MSC Yacht Club suites will see a $3 rise per person, per night, with the new rate set at $23. Importantly, children under two years old will remain exempt from these charges, regardless of the accommodation type.
Prepaid Gratuities and Exemptions
Passengers who have already prepaid their gratuities will not be affected by the new rates, even if their cruise departs after the changes take effect. MSC Cruises has assured guests that the current Hotel Service Charge will be honoured for those who have prepaid or choose to do so before 11th May 2026. While these charges are automatically added to onboard accounts, guests can discuss any service concerns with the Guest Relations Manager to request adjustments.
Regional Variations in Gratuity Rates
It’s important to note that MSC’s gratuity rates differ globally. The announced increase applies only to Caribbean and Alaska sailings. In other regions, the charges remain unchanged, typically ranging from $14 to $19 per night for standard cabins and $19 to $23 for Yacht Club suites. Many UK cruises do not require guests to pay gratuities.
MSC’s Expansion in Alaska
The timing of this increase coincides with MSC’s expansion into Alaska. MSC Poesia will launch the line’s inaugural Alaska season from Seattle on 11th May 2026, the same day the new pricing comes into effect. This marks a significant milestone for MSC Cruises as it strengthens its presence in the region.
Industry-Wide Price Adjustments
MSC Cruises is not alone in revising its gratuity structure. Several cruise lines have recently increased their rates due to ongoing cost pressures. Margaritaville at Sea raised daily gratuities to $22 per person for standard cabins and $25 for suites earlier this year. Carnival Cruise Line also adjusted its rates, with changes taking effect on 2nd April 2026. Meanwhile, Holland America Line announced a $1 increase per person, per day across all accommodation categories.
