The Tragic Death of Anna Kepner
In a heartbreaking incident, 16-year-old Anna Kepner was found dead aboard the Carnival Horizon cruise ship. The tragedy unfolded on 8th November 2025, during the final day of a six-night Western Caribbean cruise. The ship had set sail from Miami on 2nd November, with stops planned in Grand Cayman and Cozumel. Anna was travelling with her family, sharing a cabin on Deck 8 with her 16-year-old stepbrother, T.H., and another stepbrother aged 14. Her absence at breakfast led to the discovery of her body, wrapped in a sheet and hidden under the bed with lifejackets.
Investigation and Charges
The suspicious circumstances surrounding Anna’s death prompted the Federal Bureau of Investigation to take charge of the case while the ship was still in international waters. A post-mortem revealed that Anna died from mechanical asphyxiation, specifically a “bar hold” strangulation. This tragic event has led to the indictment of her stepbrother, T.H., who is now facing charges of first-degree murder and aggravated sexual abuse. Initially handled under juvenile jurisdiction, the case has been moved to adult court due to the severity of the alleged crimes.
Legal Proceedings
The US Department of Justice has confirmed the charges against T.H., who could face life imprisonment if convicted. The decision to try him as an adult was influenced by the gravity of the allegations, his prior history, and psychological evaluations. Assistant US Attorney Alejandra L. López is spearheading the prosecution. The US Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, Jason A. Reding Quiñones, expressed condolences to Anna’s family and emphasised the importance of a fair trial. He reminded the public that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Carnival Cruise Line’s Position
Carnival Cruise Line has not released any public statements regarding the ongoing case. The cruise line is not involved in any legal proceedings related to the incident, and no crew members were implicated. The case has attracted significant attention, partly due to text messages between Anna’s stepmother and her ex-husband, which hinted at early concerns about potential criminal charges.
